Programmers are often associated with boring, fat (or in contrary extremely thin) nerds wearing huge glasses and having no social life. Quite often you can meet individuals that perfectly fit this description. However, there are some programmers having artistic souls- they use their programming skills to create something unusual. One of these guys is Jared Tarbell, highly skilled and talented man from New Mexico.

Complexication is a portfolio of his experiments with mathematical equations and coding (Flash and Java)- he is providing source code for each of his works as well as applets presenting how the actual code works and how the final result is being created. In this way the experience of the viewer is much higher- people who are really interested in this kind of projects can actually reuse the code and create their own versions of the work themselves. Click on any of the images below to see more information about particular image.

I have met Marek once in Bieszczady's mountains (btw it's a very beautiful place to go for summer holidays). I was a young (younger than now) kid those days. He gave me his business card with web address mielnickidesign.com. After a few years by chance I have stumbled upon his website again and got excited about the amount of interesting projects Marek was involved with since our meeting. I am sure that Marek does not remember me and I also don't remember him much. It's the coincidence I've found his website after those few years and that's why I've decided to promote his works on my blog. Obviously, those are the works that are really worth checking out.

Marek is in both illustration and web/Flash design. He was involved in some projects like shirtee.com or tiszert.com both as a web designer and designer of t-shirts. I think that he is the founder of shirtee but I might be wrong about it. It's sad but it looks like both of those T-shirt projects either have died out or are put on hold.

What I definitely like most about works of Marek are the Flash websites. It's about the combination of minimalism and care for details. I know that such a sentence sounds strange (minimalism and details- o rly?) but that's how it is and how I can describe it. My English is not perfect and sometimes I am getting to the point where it's really hard for me to say the thing precisely and exactly- I am sorry about that. Anyway, take a look at those two websites below (click on the link or on the image to visit the site).

North Kingdom is a design company specialising in interactive projects (Flash games, websites, presentations etc). Their works were many times awarded by FWA (Favourite Websites Award)- that's really prestigious and I wish I could receive such an award one day... I won't just keep dreaming, I will work on my skills and creativity to make this dream come true in future. OK, enough bullshit :), let's keep going with the topic.

The first project that I would like to present in this post is a Mentos Kiss Fight (click this link to play)- game created for BBH London/Mentos. North Kingdom was responsible for design, development of the game, logistics and filming. Game is simple and easy- you have to fight against girls- instead of weapons, kicks or hits you have simply to kiss her and make sure she will not kiss you too often. Simple, a little dumb- but it is made neatly and it was worth spending a few minutes on it (not more ;)).

On Toyota's mind is a beautifully designed interactive presentation of various Toyota's inventions and ideas implemented in their cars.

The last project I wanted to present here is the game "Get The Glass" (FWA site of the month and Gold at Cannes Lions 2007). The game is simply perfect- the animations, 3D modelling, music, even the game play. Everything in it is first class and it was really pleasant to try and play it- check it out yourself!

Would you like to revise some of the things you had a chance to learn in primary school? Playing a game called BBC Questionaut, a Flash game developed by Amanita Design you have a chance to do it in a pleasant, entertaining way. In a game you get a chance to travel across the knowledge universe visiting different planets and solving the puzzles and answering different questions divided into 8 categories. The quiz questions you will have a chance to answer include mathematical problems, biology, physics, writing etc.

Astonishing picturesque graphics combined with the sound effects and beautiful music created by Floex (Tomas Dvorak). It was a pleasure for me to play this game and admire the beauty of the world created by the talented Czech designers from Amanita Design studio.

1. Website of Michael Fakesch

2. Concert of Apparat - flyer

It is blank- flyer of Apparat concert

It is blank is a studio based in Vilnus, Lithuania. It was founded by the photographer Paul Paper and graphic designer Griskevicius Jurgis. They work in different areas combining art and technology: graphic design, photography, branding, programming etc.

I first visited their portfolio via link on the website of a musician, Michael Fakesch. The Fakesch's site is very eyecatching and memorable. The coloured blocks tilting from the top have so much visual power- its simplicity and nice usability solutions are the power of this website.

Erik Natzke - jot.eriknatzke.com

Erik Natzke keeps amazing me while I browsed through his collection of works in his portfolio. Every work aims to attract and suprise the viewer- his playing with shapes, colours, combinations of different patterns in every single piece of his work are just incredibly good.

The techniques Erik Natzke is using are also quite original. He is playing with the photos using Flash with Actionscript generating the deformations and patterns. You could see how transformed the original scene is in the two pictures below: (1) is the image Erik Natzke was playing with and (2) is the final result.
