BooneOakley would probably be another advertising agency that nobody would care about so much. But they had a brilliant idea of creating their portfolio entirely on youtube.com. How does it work? When you visit their portfolio you will be redirected to the "front page" movie on youtube. The movie has got all the web interaction embedded - clicking on buttons will redirect you to another youtube movie. This is quite original idea and I am sure BooneOakley will get thousands of visists- by this post I am also adding some traffic to their portfolio. Enjoy!

Oh, by the way- the works presented in the "youtube" portfolio are also quite good. But who really cares? ;-)

Programmers are often associated with boring, fat (or in contrary extremely thin) nerds wearing huge glasses and having no social life. Quite often you can meet individuals that perfectly fit this description. However, there are some programmers having artistic souls- they use their programming skills to create something unusual. One of these guys is Jared Tarbell, highly skilled and talented man from New Mexico.

Complexication is a portfolio of his experiments with mathematical equations and coding (Flash and Java)- he is providing source code for each of his works as well as applets presenting how the actual code works and how the final result is being created. In this way the experience of the viewer is much higher- people who are really interested in this kind of projects can actually reuse the code and create their own versions of the work themselves. Click on any of the images below to see more information about particular image.

I have met Marek once in Bieszczady's mountains (btw it's a very beautiful place to go for summer holidays). I was a young (younger than now) kid those days. He gave me his business card with web address mielnickidesign.com. After a few years by chance I have stumbled upon his website again and got excited about the amount of interesting projects Marek was involved with since our meeting. I am sure that Marek does not remember me and I also don't remember him much. It's the coincidence I've found his website after those few years and that's why I've decided to promote his works on my blog. Obviously, those are the works that are really worth checking out.

Marek is in both illustration and web/Flash design. He was involved in some projects like shirtee.com or tiszert.com both as a web designer and designer of t-shirts. I think that he is the founder of shirtee but I might be wrong about it. It's sad but it looks like both of those T-shirt projects either have died out or are put on hold.

Shirtee.com- T-shirt shop founded (most probably) by Marek Mielnicki
Shirtee.com - project of Marek Mielnicki

Tiszert.com- Mielnicki designed website of this T-shirt shop
Tiszert-com - web design by mielnickidesign.com

What I definitely like most about works of Marek are the Flash websites. It's about the combination of minimalism and care for details. I know that such a sentence sounds strange (minimalism and details- o rly?) but that's how it is and how I can describe it. My English is not perfect and sometimes I am getting to the point where it's really hard for me to say the thing precisely and exactly- I am sorry about that. Anyway, take a look at those two websites below (click on the link or on the image to visit the site).

If you got interested by what I presented in this post take a look at Mielnicki's portfolio- you will find more of it there.

The idea of designgive.com is simple. Designers donate a T-shirt design and in this way promote themselves. People who buy the T-shirts select charity organization that they would like to support. Money goes for the good cause and everybody is happy.

And moreover, some of the T-shirts that you can (or could if they were in stock) buy are just awesome. And the names of some of the designers are really big: Si Scott, Brooke Nunez, Paul Macgregor.

I need to put some limits on number of pictures uploaded to my server (the daily traffic on Blastyle blog is really impressive nowadays). So that's why I selected only 5 T-shirts to be presented; take a look:

Si Scott - Leash Called Love

Scott Bartlett - Octobunny

Maciej Rakowski - Industrial Re-pollution

Oh Yeah Studio is a small graphic design studio from Norway composed of Christina and Hans Christian (btw I already wrote a post about someone else from Norway before). In the portfolio of Oh Yeah Studio all of works presented are non-commercial, customer-intervention-free. As they call it: "stuff after dinner".

Their style is quite difficult to describe. They use quite clean backgrounds, usually some grey gradients. The main elements of the picture are clearly presented and placed. What I like about their works is simple structures and the fact that fonts and shapes look unreal and unnatural. Hmm, as I said: it's hard to describe their works, better to look at them.

I am loving the illustrations made by Irena Zablotska (Joulu). She is the Ukrainian designer with portfolio full of very nice works- it was quite difficult for me to select the images which would accompany this post. Most of the illustrations created by Zablotska are depicting some monstrously looking creatures. They are not really terrifying and actually it is quite pleasant to look at them. The pictures look to be quite simple at a first glance, but after having a closer look they reveal their complexity and amount of work which is needed to create them. Congratulations Irena- your works are brilliant!

Teis Albers is a young designer from Netherlands. He has developed a fantastic technique of collage, joining the photos with different elements and layers of colours. Some of the works look really fresh and original- I would like to present just a few of them here (the names are not original- made up by me ;)):

JK Keller - c71123.com - adaptation to my generation

JK Keller is a talented designer who combines technology and powerful ideas to create amazing works of art. He seems to be most famous for the project called "The adaption to my generation - a daily photo project". The project started in 1998 and starting from this time JK Keller was shooting a photo of himself and in this way he tried to observe the differences in his appearance throughout the days, weeks and months. And actually he has changed a lot- you can have a look at the whole collection of photos here. If you're impatient and don't want to spend all your life browsing through the thousands of photos you can watch the video "Living my life faster" which sums up 8 years of the daily photo project.

Actually browsing through the various projects of JK Keller I found many others which are also very original. "Spam abstractions" is the combination of 100 hundred spam emails with the text deleted and you can see the result below.

Spam abstractions
Spam abstractions JK Keller - c71123.com

The last project I found extremely interesting (yeah, you can call me a geek). However, it might be too complicated for me to explain how those images were created so let me just paste the explanation that I found on the site of this project made by the author:

"(...)But to answer your first query: how it works. The app that I wrote visits a website and downloads the source text. It parses the text, looking for links to other web pages, links to itself, links to other file types, email addresses, etc. Based on how many links it finds, it creates a “star”. The number of links found equals the number of spines on the “star”. Thus, if it finds no links, it draws a circle.

It then goes to the first link on the page and does the same thing. Then it iterates over thousands of pages. E-mail addresses are drawn as a plus-sign, errors are an ‘x’, non-html files are squares, and a line follows the path the program took.

Another caveat: The first instance of a web page is a unique star. Anytime the app finds that same page linked to by another page, it draws a line back to the originating star instead of another star.(...)"

Jimmy Turrell is a graphic designer based in London. The clients he worked for include Nike, Channel 4, MTV, The Guardian, New York Times, Universal Records, XL Recordings, Lexus.

The portfolio of selected works as well as the archives present the massive amount of illustrations and pictures.

The works of Jimmy Turrel keep to be simple and not too detailed but they look great - it proves that quite often the simplicity is the key.
